Preserving a Proud Tradition: The Highland Games and the Foundation for Scottish Athletics
In the rich and diverse tapestry that makes up the population of our great nation, few cultures have left as distinct a mark as that of Scotland. From its hearty food and lyrical language to centuries-old traditions, Scottish heritage is woven deeply into the American story. Among its most iconic contributions are the Highland Games—a powerful symbol of strength, honor, and cultural pride.
Yet today, these vibrant celebrations of heritage and athleticism are fading from the public eye. Participation in Highland Games competitions across the United States has declined in recent years, placing this historic athletic tradition at risk of being lost to future generations.
The Foundation for Scottish Athletics, Inc. (FSA) is committed to reversing this trend.
Our mission is to foster and promote amateur Scottish Highland Games athletics throughout the United States while ensuring the traditions and cultural heritage of the Highland Games endure for generations to come. We work to educate the public about the history and significance of these events while creating opportunities for athletes of all backgrounds and abilities to participate.
A key part of our mission is expanding access to the sport through inclusive athletic programming. The Foundation for Scottish Athletics proudly supports:
• Youth programs for athletes ages 13 and older, introducing young athletes to the strength, discipline, and camaraderie of Highland Games competition.
• Adaptive athletics opportunities, working to ensure that athletes with disabilities and wounded veterans have meaningful pathways to participate in Highland Games training and competition.
• Support for current and aspiring Highland Games athletes, helping them grow within the sport and continue the traditions of these historic events.
Through our programs, FSA provides:
Training support and athlete development
Clinics and workshops covering Highland Games techniques and safety
Assistance with equipment and gear
Support for competition participation and travel
We believe the Highland Games should not be a relic of the past—they should be a vibrant celebration of our present and future. By growing youth participation, supporting adaptive athletes and veterans, and expanding opportunities for new competitors, we are working to ensure that the strength, heritage, and spirit of the Highland Games continue to thrive.
